David Henry Allen
Historian of
The McAuliffes
1922 - 1994
David Henry Allen (Brother Henry) was born in Newmarket, County Cork on March 18, 1922 and died in 1994 at the age of 72. He was a member of the Presentation Brothers Order in Cork City. He was an enthusiastic historian who did a lot of research about the history of the North Cork area which included Clanawley, the ancient lands of the MacAuliffes.
Much of what is known today about the history of the MacAuliffes in ancient times is due to Brother Allen's painstaking research. In 1991 a summary of his work was published in a small book "The McAuliffes of Clanawley". Much of the material for that book came from his earlier book "A History of Newmarket" published in 1973. The book on the McAuliffes is out of print but I was able to purchase a copy of the Newmarket one from a bookshop in Newmarket in 2008. Brother Allen was also the author of a book on the Presentation Brothers.
On 15 July 2008 a group of McAuliffes joined the Presentation Brothers and a member of Brother Allen's family for a service of commemoration for Brother Allen at his graveside in the cemetery at the monastery of Mount St.Joseph in Cork City. Local McAuliffes were joined by some from overseas who had arrived in advance of the Clan Rally. After the commemoration service light refreshments were enjoyed at the Monastery. The gathering noted the debt owed to Brother Allen for the work he had done in unearthing the clann's history.
